Palm Beach 05 September 2006

Another one of those happy happy co-incidences meant that Maria and the girls were spending a few days in Sydney before heading back to Ireland. They arrived in Sydney on Saturday evening the 2nd of September, and we all spend the Sunday wandering around Darling Harbour (including a trip to the aquarium which was very cool). On the Monday evening, I went into town to meet them for dinner, along with a friend of Maria's, whose name escapes me at the moment (Renee? Rachel? R-something? - help me out here Maria!). Then on Tuesday, I took the day off work, we rented a car and made our way north to Palm Beach, where they film scenes from Home and Away.
As luck would have it, they happened to be filming some scenes there when we arrived. The first scene was between Leah and Peter (a very curious one, since Peter's supposed to be dead. We figured it was either a dream or a flash-back or something.... but you never know in soap-land!!). Look, there they are in the background:

But it was the second scene that we were more interested in. It featured Sally (our hero!) and Brad (Johnny-come-lately, we weren't too bothered about him). During a break in filming, we approached Kate Richie (or Sally to you and me!) and asked if she would mind us having our photo taken with her. She was lovely and friendly and said of course we could. Another fan (an Irish guy, as it happened) took this picture so the three of us could be in it. We were soooooooooooo excited about it all, because you see, we've grown up with Sally. She's been on the show since the very beginning and we've been watching it since it first aired in Irish TV. As we returned to our spot on the beach to watch the rest of the filming, we wondered if we should have asked to get our picture taken with the new Brad character (or whatever his real name is). But we figured that we hadn't grown up with him and it wasn't our fault we weren't really interested. We weren't there to sooth his ego, after all. But we did feel a little bit bad that most other people there were flocking to Kate for pictures and autographs and ignoring him. Ah well, that's show-business :)

There we were, just hanging out at the surf club.

On our way back to "The City", we stopped in Manly for a bite to eat and nearly froze to death as we realised that sunny days doesn't necessarily mean warm evenings in wintertime in New South Wales.... lesson learnt.

I dropped the girls back to their hostel in King's Cross (my second cross-city trip in the rental car... not one that I'm keen to do again. Sooooo many lanes!) Then Maria came out to my place in Lane Cove and stayed the night. The following morning we dropped the car off and got on the bus heading into the city. As we approaced St Leonards, where I work, Maria and I said our goodbyes after meeting up three times (NZ, Cairns and Sydney) on her holiday. Good value for money, I'd say ;) Seriously though, it was really was lovely to have her and the girls in Sydney for a wee bit. I had been a bit lonesome all on my own in the big city, so I thoroughly enjoyed having one of my best buddies to hang out with. Hope Limerick is treating you well, Maria :)

Awwwww ... it was fab! Limerick isn't half as good, nay, not even a fifth as good as hanging out with you and Sal!

And as for the name of my friend ... R-nothing! Laurie. L-something!
