Cairns 04 - 11 August 2006
Thursday the 10th of August was really our last day in Cairns because we were booked on a really early flight to Brisbane the following morning. And happiest of happy co-incidences, Maria, Eileen, Deidre and Catriona arrived in Cairns on the Wednesday night. So we spent Thursday hanging around the lagoon in Cairns with them, and Maria, Andrew and I went out for dinner that evening.
As it happened, we were having dinner just down the street from this restaurant, Kanis, where my brother-in-law, Philip worked nine years ago when he and Clair were on their trip around the world. It constantly amazes me how much things have changes in that short time. When Clair and Philip were in Australia, the only way we could communicate with them was with letter writing and the occasional (prohibitively expensive) phone call. Now, I send text messages, use cheap calling cards to ring home almost every week, send e-mails and can share all my pictures with everyone using this blog. Clair came home with a million rolls of film to be developed (ok, well maybe 20 or 30) and she had to wait until she had enough money saved up to pay for that before she could see all of her Australia pictures. And it's only been nine years. Astonishing changes.
Friday morning, we flew back to Brisbane and were lucky enough to enjoy the sunrise from the airplane. We spent Friday just hanging around Brisbane, enjoying the boats on the river and having a wander around the South Bank area. Saturday was a bit of a sad day, with Andrew heading back to NZ (lets just say my face was well rinsed). But as I write this, (nearly eight weeks later) I'm back in Christchurch for a visit, so I survived the time apart and now we've got our trip to Rarotonga on Friday to look forward to :)
