Magnetic Island 31 July - 03 August 2006

Towards the end of WW II, a fort was built on Magnetic Island to monitor ships sailing near the Australian Coastline. By the time the fort was completed, however, the war was all but over. A sign at the forts told us that a shot had never been fired in anger from there, however one shot caused 'mild astonishment' when an allied vessel was shot in confusion.

The view from the forts is pretty amazing as you can see from the pictures, so the forts walk is a pretty popular one with visitors to the Island

On our way back from the forts, we saw one of Magnetic Island's Koalas munching down on his evening meal.
On our last day on Magnetic Island, we loaded up the Moke and headed down to the harbour to get the boat back to Townsville and then a bus on to Mission Beach for a night.
