Christmas in Nelson 2006
On the 22nd of December, I headed across the Tasman to Christchurch. The following morning, after picking up my tickets home to Ireland and having coffee with Owen, we hit the road to Nelson. Christchurch was cold and wet, so were weren't too sorry to say goodbye to the East Coast and head for some sunshine in Nelson. As we made our way over the Lewis Pass, the weather steadily improved... Happy Days!!
The next day was Christmas Eve - so of course we went to the beach.... as you do.... John and Kath went ahead of the rest of us and set up a BBQ breakfast. They even did pancakes on the Barbie - very impressive and very tasty!
John was working on Christmas day, so we waited until he came home in the afternoon to open all the pressies. It was a tough wait for some of us though!
To keep our minds off the pile of pressies waiting for us - we went for a swim in the river. There are a number of good swimming holes not far from the house and so I had my first ever Christmas Day swim! Nasty little sandflies had a good snack of my ankles and feet though - I was scratching for days.

Here we are about halfway through the present opening; That's Andrew's sister Katherine with her little girl Lara in the middle. Katherine's partner, John has escaped the camera somehow - he might be under the tree collecting a present... We had a beautiful Christmas Dinner that evening with all the trimmings - but no brussels sprouts!! woo hoo!!
Kath and John bought the girls a small swimming pool for Christmas - so one of the projects for the week was to set it up. First we had to prepare an area that was perfectly flat for the swimming pool to be set up on. Kath, John, Andrew and I set about lifting the layer of turf and levelling it out. Then the next day (or it might have been the day after - I think we got rained on) the guys went and got a trailor of sand and then we put the pool up and filled it (filling took about 7 hours) .
It's a lovely wee pool and I was very glad to have a splash the evening before we left Nelson. In fact, Andrew even took a dip the morning before we left.
We headed back to Christchurch on the 29th of Dec and I flew back to Sydney early the following morning. All in all, it was a fabulous Christmas and I want to say a special thanks to all the Slaney crew for looking after me soooo well. I was a little homesick on Christmas Eve - but everyone was so good to me that I soon felt better. So thank you to John and Kath for putting me up and feeding me! Thanks to Marion, Katherine and John G for your lovely company and generous gifts. Thanks to Lara, Em and Jess for being lots of fun and making me laugh when I was a wee bit lonesome for home. And thanks to Andrew.... just because :)
